How to Download and Install Rocket League Free Guide
Psyonix's high-octane hybrid of arcade soccer and vehicular mayhem — free to play, easy to learn, and almost impossible to master.
Visit Official Site →Is Rocket League Free?
Yes. Rocket League went free to play in September 2020 and has remained free ever since. There is no purchase required to download the game, play online, or access competitive modes.
The game is funded through optional cosmetic microtransactions — car bodies, wheels, decals, goal explosions, and the seasonal Rocket Pass. None of these affect gameplay. Every car in the game has identical hitbox and physics behaviour, so a player in a default car can compete on exactly equal terms with someone who has spent money.
One important platform note: on PC, Rocket League is distributed exclusively through the Epic Games Store. The game was removed from Steam for new players in 2020, though existing Steam owners still receive updates. There is no standalone installer, and macOS is not supported.
System Requirements (PC)
Requirements below reflect Epic's official specifications (checked October 2026).
- OS: Windows 7 (64-bit) or newer 64-bit Windows. Windows 10 or Windows 11 is strongly recommended — Windows 7 has not received security updates since 2020.
- Processor: 2.5 GHz dual-core (minimum); 3.0+ GHz quad-core (recommended)
- RAM: 4 GB minimum (8 GB recommended)
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 or AMD Radeon R7 270X, or better (minimum); NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 470, or better (recommended)
- DirectX: Version 11
- Storage: 20 GB available space
- Internet: Broadband connection required for online play
- Note: Rocket League is unusually well optimised and runs comfortably on modest hardware. A stable framerate matters far more than visual settings — competitive players routinely lower graphics to maximise FPS and reduce input latency.
How to Install Rocket League
- Install the Epic Games Launcher. Rocket League on PC is distributed through the Epic Games Store. If you do not have the launcher, download it from store.epicgames.com/download and install it.
- Create or sign in to an Epic account. A free Epic Games account is required. Sign in, or create one and verify your email address.
- Find Rocket League. Open the Epic Games Store, search for "Rocket League", and open the game page. It is free to play.
- Click "Get". Confirm the free order to add Rocket League to your library permanently.
- Install the game. Go to your Library, select Rocket League, choose an install location, and click Install. The download is roughly 20 GB.
- Launch and play. Once installed, click Launch. Complete the basic tutorial, then play a few exhibition matches against bots before jumping into online play.
Getting Started
- Learn the three core mechanics first. Jumping, boosting, and dodging are the foundation of everything else. A short tap of jump gives a small bump; holding it gives maximum height. Boosting accelerates you on the ground and sustains altitude in the air. Dodging — double-jumping while moving in a direction — gives you a directional flip that is faster than boosting and has no cooldown.
- Use ball cam, but learn to toggle it. Ball cam keeps the camera pointed at the ball, essential for tracking play. The skill is knowing when to switch it off — usually when dribbling, lining up a ground shot, or collecting boost.
- Change your camera settings. The default field of view is 90, which is too narrow for competitive play. Most players raise FOV to around 105–110 and increase distance and height slightly. This is a free change that immediately improves awareness.
- Rebind boost. Boost is the button you press most often, and the default bind is awkward for jumping and boosting simultaneously. Move it to a shoulder button or a key that lets you jump and boost together comfortably.
- Start with 2v2 or 3v3. 1v1 is punishing for beginners because every mistake leads directly to a goal. 2v2 and 3v3 give you teammates to cover mistakes and teach rotation naturally.
- Play against bots and in free play first. Exhibition matches against bots let you learn car control and ball physics without pressure. Free Play — an empty arena with unlimited boost — is the best place to practise hitting the ball consistently.
Useful Tips
- 🎯 Stop ball chasing. The most common beginner mistake is hitting the ball simply because you can reach it. Ask "Should I hit this ball?" rather than "Can I hit this ball?"
- 🔄 Learn basic rotation. In 3v3, one player challenges the ball, one supports behind them, and one covers defence. When the first player finishes their touch, they rotate to the back.
- ⚡ Collect boost deliberately. Boost pads are scattered across the field, with small pads giving partial boost and large pads refilling your tank.
- 🛞 Land on your wheels. After every jump or aerial, focus on landing on all four wheels and maintaining momentum.
- 🧠 Play 1v1 to expose weaknesses. It is uncomfortable, but 1v1 teaches you shadow defence, kickoffs, and ball control faster than any other mode.
- 📈 Use training packs. The built-in Custom Training browser has free community-made packs for every skill, from basic saves to aerials.
- 🔇 Turn off camera shake. In Settings → Camera, disable camera shake. It adds nothing and makes precise aerial control harder.
- 🆓 Free vs. Rocket Pass. Rocket Pass has a free reward track that gives items just for playing. The premium track costs Credits and is entirely cosmetic.
- 📅 Expect regular seasons. Rocket League runs seasonal updates with new arenas, car bodies, and limited-time modes. Season 24 launched on 23 September 2026 with Honor Duels, Black Market trade-ins, and modernised keyboard/mouse controls.
Rocket League vs FIFA (EA FC) vs Rocket League Sideswipe
- Rocket League: Vehicular soccer with rocket-powered cars. Free to play, skill-based, with a famously high skill ceiling and identical cars for every player. Best for players who want competitive, mechanics-focused multiplayer.
- FIFA (EA FC): Traditional football simulation with licensed teams, players, and leagues. Paid annually. Best for football fans and players who want realistic on-pitch action.
- Rocket League Sideswipe: A 2D mobile spin-off of Rocket League, free to play on iOS and Android. Simpler mechanics, shorter matches, same underlying car-soccer concept. No cross-progression with the main game. Best for playing Rocket League on the go.
Rocket League and FIFA are not really substitutes — one is a physics-based arcade game, the other is a licensed sports sim. Rocket League is free and has a purer competitive focus. FIFA is for players who want realistic football. Sideswipe is the mobile companion, but it is a separate progression track.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- ❌ Game won't launch from Epic. Right-click Rocket League in the Epic Library → Manage → Verify. The launcher re-downloads any corrupt files. If that fails, close Epic completely (check Task Manager) and relaunch.
- 🐌 Low FPS or stuttering. In Settings → Video, lower "Quality Preset", disable "Bloom" and "Light Shafts". Also check your GPU drivers are current — Rocket League is sensitive to old drivers.
- 🔊 No audio. Confirm Rocket League isn't muted in the Windows volume mixer. Also check Settings → Audio in-game — Rocket League sometimes picks the wrong device when headphones are hot-plugged.
- 🎮 Controller not detected. Plug in the controller before launching. On Steam (if you own the legacy Steam version), disable Steam Input. In Epic, ensure Windows recognizes the controller first (check "Set up USB game controllers" in Windows).
- 🔑 "Your account has been linked to another Epic account" error. Rocket League links one Epic account per platform ID. If you previously played on PlayStation or Xbox and linked a different Epic account, contact Epic Support to unlink — you cannot switch Epic accounts on the same platform ID.
- 💾 Game crashes during a match. Verify game files, then update GPU drivers. If crashes persist, disable the "Rocket League overlay" (Epic overlay is a common culprit) in Settings → General.
- 🍎 Can I play on Mac? **No.** Rocket League is not supported on macOS. Mac users must dual-boot Windows or Linux to play.
