Is Valorant Free?

Yes. Valorant is free to play. All weapons, maps, and gameplay content are available at no cost, and each new agent is unlockable for free through gameplay — via Kingdom Credits or the Agent Recruitment Event. Riot earns revenue from optional cosmetic weapon skins and the Battle Pass, which are purely visual.

There is no pay-to-win mechanic — every player has access to the same weapons, the same abilities (once an agent is unlocked), and the same maps. The main caveat is that Vanguard, Riot's anti-cheat, runs at the kernel level and is mandatory. This is not optional — without Vanguard, you cannot launch Valorant.

System Requirements (PC)

Riot publishes three tiers. The table below reflects the official May 2026 specification page.

  • OS: Windows 10 (Build 19041+) 64-bit, or Windows 11 64-bit
  • CPU requirement: SSE 4.2 or AVX support required
  • Processor (minimum, 30 FPS): Intel Core i3-540 / AMD Athlon 200GE. ARM not supported.
  • Processor (recommended, 60 FPS): Intel Core i3-4150 / AMD Ryzen 3 1200
  • Processor (high-end, 144 FPS): Intel Core i5-9400F / AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Graphics (minimum): Intel HD 4000 / AMD Radeon R5 220 / NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 / AMD Radeon R7 240
  • Graphics (recommended): NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti / AMD Radeon R7 370 / Intel Arc A310
  • VRAM: 1 GB minimum if using a dedicated GPU
  • DirectX: Version 11 required
  • Storage: ~28–30 GB; budget 40 GB for updates and Vanguard
  • Internet: Broadband connection required
  • Windows 11 security: TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot required. On Windows 10, these are not required for Vanguard.
  • Not supported: ARM Windows, macOS, Linux, virtual machines, and cloud gaming.

How to Install Valorant

  1. Go to the official site. Visit playvalorant.com and click "Download".
  2. Download the Riot Client. Valorant installs only through Riot's launcher — there is no standalone installer.
  3. Run the installer. Open the downloaded file and follow the prompts to install the Riot Client.
  4. Create a Riot account. Register with your email, username, and password. This single account works across all Riot games (Valorant, League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics).
  5. Download Vanguard. Riot's anti-cheat (Vanguard) installs alongside the game — required to play. It runs at the kernel level and, in the default mode, requires a system restart. If you are on Windows 11 25H2 or later and meet the security requirements, you can optionally switch to Vanguard On-Demand so it starts only when you launch a Riot game.
  6. Install Valorant. Open the Riot Client, find Valorant, and click "Install". Once done, click "Play".

Getting Started

  1. Complete the training. The Agent Tutorial and Deathmatch teach aiming, movement, and ability basics — do not skip them.
  2. Pick an Agent. Choose a role: Duelist (entry frag), Controller (smoke/utility), Sentinel (defense), or Initiator (recon). Phoenix and Reyna are the most forgiving Duelists for new players; Jett rewards movement mastery and is better once you know the maps.
  3. Adjust settings. Valorant requires DirectX 11 — make sure your GPU driver supports it. Turn off Vsync if input feels laggy, and set your monitor's refresh rate correctly in Windows.
  4. Set up your crosshair. Go to Settings → Crosshair and pick a preset that matches your style. Crosshair size matters more than looks.
  5. Play Unrated first. Skip Competitive until you're comfortable — Unrated is the best place to learn maps and agents without pressure.

Useful Tips

  • 🎯 Practice in Range. The shooting range lets you warm up and test weapons for free — do 5 minutes before every match.
  • 🛡️ Enable 2FA. Protect your Riot account with two-factor authentication — accounts are common targets for phishing.
  • 🗺️ Learn map callouts. Memorize common map locations (like "A Main", "B Sky") so you can coordinate with your team.
  • ⚙️ Disable fullscreen optimizations. Right-click the Valorant shortcut → Properties → Compatibility → check "Disable fullscreen optimizations" for lower input lag.
  • 🔇 Use headphones. Footsteps and ability sounds give you crucial intel — stereo headphones make a huge difference.
  • 🚫 Never download "Vanguard bypass" tools. They are scams and can get your account permanently banned. Vanguard only runs on Windows 10/11 x86-64.
  • 💥 Learn spray control per weapon. Valorant's recoil is consistent per weapon. Spend time in the range with the Vandal (no first-shot inaccuracy, one-tap potential) and Phantom (better for spraying through smokes).
  • 🧠 Crosshair placement beats flick shots. Keep your crosshair at head level and pre-aim corners — this wins more rounds than trying to flick to enemies' heads.
  • 🔒 Consider Vanguard On-Demand if you meet the requirements. On **Windows 11 25H2+** with Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, VBS, HVCI, and IOMMU, you can set Vanguard to start only when a Riot game launches instead of at boot.

Valorant vs CS2 vs Overwatch 2

  • Valorant: Tactical FPS with hero abilities. Strict gunplay mechanics similar to CS2, but abilities add escape routes, smokes, and recon. Faster TTK than Overwatch. Best for players who want CS-style shooting with hero depth.
  • Counter-Strike 2: Pure tactical shooter — no abilities, just guns and utility (grenades). Higher mechanical skill ceiling and stricter economy. Best for players who want pure aim-based competitive play.
  • Overwatch 2: Hero shooter with abilities as the core mechanic. 5v5 role-based teams, longer TTK, and objective-based maps. Best for players who want team-based hero combat rather than individual gunplay.

All three are free. Valorant rewards precision shooting plus ability usage, CS2 rewards pure mechanical skill, and Overwatch 2 rewards team coordination and ability usage. Many players install more than one.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • 🚫 Vanguard won't install or causes a boot loop. On **Windows 11**, Vanguard requires **TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot** enabled in BIOS/UEFI. If either is disabled, enable them and retry. **On Windows 10, these are not required** — if Vanguard fails on Windows 10, the cause is usually an outdated Windows build (below 19041) or a missing SSE 4.2/AVX CPU feature, not TPM.
  • ❌ "Vanguard is not running" error. Restart your PC — in the default mode, Vanguard must be loaded at boot. If it still doesn't start, uninstall and reinstall the Riot Client. Vanguard does not work in VMs or cloud gaming.
  • 🐌 Low FPS on modern hardware. Valorant requires **DirectX 11** — there is no DirectX 9 mode to fall back to. Disable Vsync, lower graphics settings to medium, and confirm your GPU drivers are current. If FPS is still low, check that your CPU meets the SSE 4.2/AVX requirement.
  • 🔊 No audio or voice chat not working. In Settings → Audio, set the correct output and input devices explicitly. Check that the Riot Client and Valorant are allowed through Windows Firewall for voice chat.
  • 🎮 Mouse feels inaccurate or accelerated. Disable Windows "Enhance pointer precision" (Settings → Mouse → Additional mouse options → Pointer Options). Valorant players specifically do not want pointer acceleration.
  • ⚠️ Banned account or "HWID ban" error. Vanguard bans are permanent and enforced at the hardware level. Contact Riot Support through playvalorant.com — there is no legitimate bypass.
  • 🌐 "Cannot connect to Riot Client" error. Usually a network issue. Restart the Riot Client, then restart your PC. If it persists, disable VPNs and check that your firewall allows RiotClientServices.exe.
  • 🖥️ Valorant won't launch on ARM Windows. Riot's spec page explicitly lists **ARM as not supported**. Snapdragon X and other Windows-on-ARM laptops cannot run Valorant natively, and there is no emulation workaround that satisfies Vanguard.
  • 🔐 Vanguard On-Demand is greyed out. It requires **Windows 11 25H2 or later** plus Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, VBS, HVCI, and IOMMU. If any of those are missing, the option stays unavailable and Vanguard remains in default always-on mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Vanguard to play Valorant?

Yes. Vanguard is Riot’s kernel-level anti-cheat and is mandatory. There is no way to play Valorant without it. Vanguard requires Windows 10 build 19041+ or Windows 11 64-bit, and SSE 4.2 or AVX CPU support. On Windows 11, Vanguard also requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot; on Windows 10 those two are not required. Since June 2026, an optional Vanguard On-Demand mode lets Vanguard start only when a Riot game launches, but it requires Windows 11 25H2 or later plus Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, VBS, HVCI, and IOMMU.

Can I play Valorant on Mac or Linux?

Not officially. Valorant does not have a Mac or Linux version, and Vanguard does not run on Linux (including via Wine/Proton) because it is a Windows kernel driver. ARM Windows is also not supported. Windows 10/11 on x86-64 is the only supported platform.

Is Valorant pay-to-win?

No. All weapons and maps are free, and agents can be unlocked with Kingdom Credits earned by playing, via the Agent Recruitment Event for new agents, or with VP. Skins have no gameplay effect. A free-to-play player can reach the highest ranks with enough skill and time.

What is the difference between Valorant and CS2?

Both are tactical FPS games with strict gunplay, but Valorant adds hero abilities (smokes, flashes, recon, escape tools) that CS2 does not have. CS2 has a stricter economy and higher mechanical skill ceiling; Valorant’s abilities add strategic depth beyond raw aim. Many players enjoy both.

How big is the Valorant download?

Around 28–30 GB for the base install, plus space for updates and Vanguard. Budget 40 GB total to be safe.

Does Valorant have cross-play with consoles?

Console-to-console only. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players share a matchmaking pool and can play together. PC and console pools are completely separate — PC players never meet console players, and Riot has said there are no plans to change this. Your account, cosmetics, Battle Pass progress, and agent unlocks carry over via your Riot account, but rank and MMR are separate per platform.
